Fire Station 41 South Lot Improvements
Update - August 28, 2025
Construction of the project is now substantially complete. Some photos of the recently completed project are shown below.
You are cordially invited to a ribbon cutting to commemorate the recent completion of the Station 41 South Lot Landscaping and Sidewalk Improvement Project. The project constructed a fire-safe interpretive garden including a commemorative bench, meandering garden path, and ocean view point, and sidewalk and safe routes to school improvements from along Avenue Alhambra and Coronado Street from Avenue Cabrillo to Obispo Road in El Granada. The project was led by the Coastside Fire Protection District and funded as a partnership between the County of San Mateo and the San Mateo County Office of Education, with other stakeholders including the Cabrillo School District and the Safe Routes To School Coastside. The event will be on September 10, 2025 at Noon at the corner of Obispo Road and Coronado Street. The event is open to the general public.

Project construction, including of the fire-safe interpretive garden, meandering path, sidewalk, curb ramps, and school zone striping and signage improvements, is nearly complete.

Construction bids were advertised on January 15, 2025 and bids are scheduled to be opened on February 5, 2025. The bid Plans and Specifications are available for viewing and download at the following links:

Background:
The Coastside Fire Protection District’s Station 41 South Lot Improvements Project will construct a drought-tolerant, fire-safe interpretive garden on the vacant unimproved south lot of Station 41 along Coronado Street between Obispo Avenue and Avenue Alhambra. The garden will consist of native, drought-tolerant plants traversed by a meandering decomposed granite path with fire-safe educational signs, landing areas, and a resting bench.
The project also may include the installation of a sidewalk around the south and east sides of the fire station property and a crosswalk across Obispo Avenue at Coronado Street. The sidewalk and crosswalk are part of the Connect the Coastside and Safe Routes to School plans for the area.

Project Status (revised 8/28/2024):
The District is applying from the County of San Mateo for the necessary permits and seeking additional funding for the sidewalk portion of the project. The current schedule is to bid the project for construction in January 2025 and construct the project in Spring/Summer 2025.
